Run Your Own Race

Run Your Own Race

This is an incredibly hectic time of year for a lot of us. School year is wrapping up which means we have concerts, award ceremonies, end of the year parties, teacher gifts, final games for spring sports, parties to celebrate the end of the season, moving up ceremonies, graduations to attend...I mean the list could go on and on.  I myself have attended so many events in the last two weeks that sometimes they all just run together.  Having said that...I went to the end of the year celebration for my daughters 4th grade class. They will be transitioning to middle school next year and their principal delivered a powerful message to them.  This is something I have been trying to instill in my own kids, yet lacked the correct metaphor to really make it hit home.  Well, what can I say, their principal absolutely nailedit!  She spoke about how growing up she was super competitive especially in athletics.  This extended into adulthood until she took up running.  She went on to explain that at the first race she ran she stepped up to the start and looked to the left and to the right.  Her immediate thought was "these are the people I have to beat."  After running the race though, she came to realize that it wasn't about beating anyone else at that race, but improving her own self and how she performed as an individual. "Run your Own Race" is not a metaphor that she made up, however she personalized it to herself and made it more impactful for both the students listening as well as the parents.  She equated this message to the struggle that kids have because of social media.  They are constantly looking to left and to the right to see what everyone else is doing and are faced with the constant comparisons.  Her message to them was "Be your own authentic self."  I absolutely loved this message and wanted to pass it along as well.  How better to express this vibe than to wear it with our newest T-shirt.  Want this on different apparel that you don't see on our website?
